St. Paul's v. Murphy

032609

Murphy met St. Paul's on a we field at Cottage Hill Park on Thursday, March 26, 2009.

St. Paul's is ranked 2nd in the 5A state rankings.  While this game was not a Section game, it was important for pride and the first place trophy from the Southern Shootout.  St. Paul's and Murphy tied their game in the Southern Shootout and for the championship of the Southern Shootout and on a gentleman's agreement between the coaches, it was decided that whoever won this rubber match would get the first place trophy and the vanquished would receive the second place trophy.

This game was originally scheduled for The Cage at the University of South Alabama but had to be moved because of the field conditions at the Cage.  The coaches agreed to try to get the game in at Cottage Hill and were able to do so.

Murphy played tough the entire game while both teams were affected to some degree by the field conditions.

Austin Pasch scored two goals, one off a header on a cross from Carlo Schick and the other off a nice volley on a diagonal run from just inside the 18 off another cross from Schick.  Carlo got Murphy's third goal off a hard shot from outside the 18 that deflected off one of St. Paul's defenders and left St. Paul's keeper standing flat footed as a result of the deflection.

Murphy now is scheduled for another non-section game with UMS-Wright on Friday, March 27, 2009.
